Gerda Weissmann Klein Assignment 1: Death Marches and Evacuations

Gerda Weissmann was held in several slave-labor camps, including this one, where she worked the looms in a factory setting.  She and the others lived in the building on the left; newly arriving prisoners were housed in the building on the right.  She and the other girls and young women were transferred to two other camps after this one before beginning the death march.  * Courtesy of Teaching Tolerance

The map below shows the routes of the death marches and evacuations carried out by the Nazis on prisoners in ghettos, concentration and extermination camps.
The key in the top right-hand corner shows the measurement of 50 miles.  Gerda survived a 350-mile death march in the bitter cold of winter.

Using the internet, find somewhere approximately 350 miles away from our school.  How does this help you further understand the importance of Gerda Weissmann Klein's story of survival?    Respond to what you have found in the comments section.  Make sure you note the destination 350 miles away from HOMS, and try to find a destination no one else in the class has noted.

  2. I found The city of Rockford in Illinois to be 352 miles away. this shows me just how far she had to walk. I had no idea how far 350 miles really is. This must have been terrible for Gerda. This brings more understanding to me about how awful the Holocaust was because of how long these death marches were. I think it is amazing that she was able to keep up with the march that was such a long hike and made it until she was liberated. This also helps me understand how so many people died from the walk because I think that would be so hard to do.

  5. There is a place called Omaha,Nebraska. Thats 346.20 miles away from our school. That is a very far distance to walk if you look at it. That is really interesting to know that it's possible that people can survive things like that. The tempatures had to have been horrible out and made it all even worse than they wanted it to be. Knowing she did that made her grow as a better and stronger person than she was before.

  6. Rockford Illinois is 352 miles away and its hard to get that in my head the she had to walk that far of a distance in the middle of the winter. she had a lot of hope in herself to be able to walk that far after being starved in the camps.

  7. Sheboygan, Wisconsin is 342 miles away and I can not believe she had to walk that far. This helps me better understand the importance of their survival story by showing me how far she had to walk and how hard it must have been to walk that far. It also shows me that their stories are very important to what we know about these death marches and how harsh they were and especially after they hadn't eaten anything.

  8. Devils Lake, North Dakota is about 352 miles away. That's pretty close to Canada! I can't believe that she walked that far! This helps me understand that she was forced to walk that far, it the middle of winter. I feel so bad for her, that's like walking from here to Canada, more or less. Good thing she had those boots to keep her warm.

    1. My Grandma and Grandpas house is 340 miles away from Hidden Oaks. I could never imagine walking that far in the worst conditions. She and many others were starving, freezing, tired, weak, and some didn't have any shoes. Lucky for Greda she had winter boots on that kept her feet warm.

  13. Lincoln, Nebraska is 339 miles away, and nearly two states away. I can't imagine the amount of willpower it took to walk that far in the freezing cold while being malnourished. I can see now why only a few hundred women survived!

  17. I picked Chicago Illinois it is about 351 miles frome Hidden Oaks Middle School. I cant imaging walking 350 miles when it takes about 6 hours to drive to Chicago. i dont think i could have made it on such little food and water. Gerda must have been verry tough to make the 350 mile walk. I still cant think of why the nazis hated jews that much.
